There are so many features that I've been using for so many years that it's almost impossible to list them all. It and Take Command are the first two things that I install on any of my PCs.įortunately, both have freeware workalikes (Double Commander and TCC/LE) that can be installed on lab machines or the like without violating licence violations.
I've been using Total Command literally for decades now.
USB port connection via special direct transfer cable, partial branch view (Ctrl+Shift+B), and many improvements to ftp, synchronizing and other functions. Unicode names almost everywhere, long names (>259 characters), password manager for ftp and plugins, synchronize empty dirs, 64 bit context menu, quick file filter (Ctrl+S). Compare editor, cursor in lister, separate trees, logging, enhanced overwrite dialog etc. Thumbnails view, custom columns, enhanced search. Tabbed interface, regular expressions, history+favorites buttons. Built-in FTP client with FXP (server to server) and HTTP proxy support. ZIP, ARJ, LZH, RAR, UC2, TAR, GZ, CAB, ACE archive handling + plugins. Compare files (now with editor) / synchronize directories. Some features include a built-in FTP client, file compare, archive file navigation, and a multi-rename tool with regular expression support. "Lister" application allows to view the binary contents of each file by picking the Lister menu item Options -> Hex.Total Commander is a shareware Orthodox File Manager (OFM) for Windows. It is also safer to use Lister than Editor, if we do not want to modify the file. Lister application, which is installed with Total Commander is useful to view huge files, which would be very slow to open with EditPlus. It opens a file viewer or "Lister" application, which does not allow edits. Note: Also the F3 (View) button is often useful. This editor will respond to the functional key button F4 within the Total Commander. Select Edit/View configuration and select the editor as C:/Program Files/EditPlus2/editplus.exe (or use the > button to browse to the location of EditPlus). Select the menu item Configuration -> Options. 
Open Total Commander and press the required button (1, 2 or 3). Set EditPlus as the Default Editor in TotCmd Read, which button (button 1, 2 or 3) you have to press, and press that button. Open the Total Commander icon on the desktop. Agree, if it asks to add shortcut to the desktop. Select c:\tools as the directory under which to install. When asked about installing Total Commander also in other languages, choose "No". This software manages files - a convenient alternative to the standard Windows OS tool 'Windows Explorer'.
